This tune captures a sense of wonder cradled inside pointed determination: traits that the city of Warsaw embodies in ample supply – as do the people of Poland.

Watching a river – especially a giant like the Hudson or the Mississippi – is a special experience. There is such serenity and also so much power. Its movements seem slowed, but are actually a small sign of all that goes on below the surface. The experience is at once exhilarating and soothing.

I set out to write an angular melody that would also be compelling and melodic, even catchy. When engaging in such flights of fancy, it can be a big help to use a familiar form, and as the saying goes, there ain’t nothin’ wrong with the blues.

This modal swing number is meant to evoke travel, especially when the pace is set and the groove is on.
