Infectious rhythm, memorable melodies, and swirling improvisation, played with spirit and delivered with heart.
Watching a river – especially a giant like the Hudson or the Mississippi – is a special experience. There is such serenity and also so much power. Its movements seem slowed, but are actually a small sign of all that goes on below the surface. The experience is at once exhilarating and soothing.
I set out to write an angular melody that would also be compelling and melodic, even catchy. When engaging in such flights of fancy, it can be a big help to use a familiar form, and as the saying goes, there ain’t nothin’ wrong with the blues.
Performed in The East Room of The White House in 2016, featuring a solo by Dan.
